Meditation: finding health through stillness

I have been meaning to take up meditation as a daily practice for a while now, but was struggling with actually doing it. None of the practices I tried before felt comfortable. I was constantly fighting to still my mind while forcing myself not to fall asleep. Until now.

Stillness

While staying here in Ubud I had the pleasure to be introduced to Tom Cronin from The Stillness Project. Tom spent 26 years as a broker in finance, trading inflation swaps and bonds for the banks. After suffering a lot of stress in his job, he turned to meditation to help manage the symptoms. This was life changing for Tom! He recently walked away from the industry at the height of his 26-year successful career. He chose to fulfil his mission of spreading calm and stillness across the globe.

The portal to access this stillness is meditation. Tom has been teaching meditation for many years now. He has inspired thousands of people all over the world as a teacher, author and keynote speaker to unlock their brilliance and calm with meditation. He has been featured on national TV in Australia, The Sydney Morning Herald, Huffington Post, Vogue magazine, Conde Nast traveller, NineMSN, The Sunday Telegraph and countless blog sites like Mind Body Green.

Transcendental Meditation Technique

I am honoured that I was given the opportunity to do two, one hour, one on one sessions with Tom. I learned how to incorporate this technique in my daily routine. A simple natural technique practiced for 15-20 minutes morning and evening, preferably before eating, sitting comfortably with your eyes closed while silently reciting a mantra.

During this Meditation the mind effortlessly transcends mental activity and experiences pure consciousness at the source of thought, while the body experiences a unique state of restfulness.

How is this technique different from any other meditation techniques? The Transcendental Meditation technique involves no focused attention nor concentration or visualisation as opposed to all the others. It’s the simplest most natural and effortless technique I came across so far. A natural process allowing you to experience a field of calm deep within. It is based on a profound and complete understanding of not just the mind and its behaviour, but also the body, and how these two interact during deep meditation. You simply allow your mind the freedom to follow its natural tendency towards happiness, and it will effortlessly settle into silence. No control necessary!

Proven health benefits

Stress is naturally dissolved, resulting in better health, more happiness and success. Transcendental Meditation is said to unfold full potential of life.

More than 600 scientific studies verifying the wide-ranging benefits of the Transcendental Meditation technique. These studies have been conducted at 250 independent universities and medical schools in 33 countries during the past 40 years. Benefits include deep relaxation and reduced stress, increased creativity and clarity, increased inner peace and happiness. But also harmonious relationships, improved performance, and improved general health.

“What we think is what we become”

I am completely surprised how easy and effective this technique is and I am now looking forward to those moments in the day of sitting quietly. I haven’t missed a day since I started and have been sleeping so much better. I’ve also been dealing with some minor health challenges since my divorce. It caused me to deal with loads of stress. Because our negative thoughts produce the biggest acid in our bodies, I am extremely grateful for Tom’s teachings. This has finally allowed me to set up a daily ritual where I can find peace and can centre. I have been witnessing these health issues clearing up in these past few days already. As I have been also looking for ways to deal with emotional trauma that I have been holding on to for too long, I believe this technique will bring even bigger results over time.

You can eat perfectly healthy, but if you deal with stress, trauma and anger, you will not be able to find the best healthy version of yourself. Diet is not the only way to health. This is why we promote a holistic alkaline lifestyle. Clearing the mind of stress and negative thoughts is a big part of this lifestyle. Like Buddha once said: “What we think is what we become”.

I would like to sincerely thank Tom Cronin for sharing this with me. If you want to learn more about his work check out the Stillness Project.
