In our last blog post we’ve talked about the importance of drinking enough water and how it can benefit your overall health.
But there is another part to water that we should take into account if we want to take our health to the next level. It’s the quality of our water.
These days we find loads of chemicals in our water. Here in Colombia it’s even so prominent that you can smell the chemicals the water is treated with when the water comes out of the tap. The smell of chlorine is so strong, you feel like you are drinking pool water.
Chlorination by-products in tap water have been associated with a higher risk of bladder cancer in cases of long-term exposure to trihalomethanes in chlorinated water at levels common in industrialised countries.
My personal experience
I remember when I was 13 years old and was visiting family friends in Washington DC. After a few days I had a sudden allergic reaction to the water from the tab. My face got red and swollen. The doctor ordered me to wash my face with bottled water. And so I did for the rest of that vacation. The swelling, redness and itching went away. The doctor suspected I had an allergic reaction to the fluoride in the water. I thought, if this is what it does to my face, what does it do inside my body?
When I was in law school in Maastricht, The Netherlands, we had to read a judgement about a decision by the municipality of Amsterdam to add fluoride to the tap water. The judge stated that this decision would be so interfering that it would need to be based on a law. There was no such law and therefore the decision was overturned. Now some students asked why would such a “small” thing as fluoride be considered as interfering, because you won’t notice it anyway. This is where I told them about my allergic reaction.
Fluoride long seen as something good, especially for our tooth health. But now scientists start to question whether we really need it in our drinking water and are concerned about the detrimental health affects when fluoride comes in the bloodstream.
Studies in animals have shown that high levels of fluoride may be toxic to brain and nerve cells and human epidemiological studies have identified possible links to learning, memory and cognition deficits.
Excessive amounts of fluoride causes fluorosis, which amounts in changes of tooth enamel. Fluoride can also become concentrated in bones which alters the tissue’s structure and weakens the skeleton.
And then there are the traces of pharmaceuticals in our tap water that actually give enough reasons for concern. We are not aware that what we take in might actually have adverse effects to our health.
A good filter can filter out the above mentioned chemicals. When you get this done you are already good on your way.
The importance of pH
In our last blog post we explained that we need sufficient water to stay hydrated and flush out toxins.
Where the number 1 small change you can make today for better health and well-being is the amount of pure water you consume daily, number 2 would be changing the quality of your water and paying attention to the pH of your water.
Our blood has a pH of 7.365. Through the process of homeostasis our body does everything it can to keep that pH balanced. A slight change in the pH of our blood will cause us to die. Just like body temperature regulation, our body will do everything to make sure you won’t die.
When we eat lots of acidic foods our body has to work harder to keep it’s slightly alkaline pH.
When we eat alkaline foods our body can actually focus on it’s real work and won’t become overstressed.
The pH scale grows exponentially. pH 6 is 10 times more acidic than pH 7, and pH 5 is 100 times more acidic than pH 7. If you think about the pH of cola and coffee which is between 3 and 4 this means that it is 1000 to 10.000 times more acidic than pH 7. To neutralise 1glass of cola, you would need to drink 36 glasses of water.
So now you get the idea.
pH 8 is 10 times more alkaline than pH 7 and 100.000 times more alkaline than pH 3. So when we drink highly alkaline water we can easier neutralise all the acid from our acid diet.
Try to find water with a pH higher than your blood. You can also make alkaline water yourself by adding 1 teaspoon of baking soda (without aluminium) to 1 litre of water. However the best way still is to get a good waterfilter that takes out the toxins, adds alkalising minerals to the water and ups the pH.
