For beautiful and healthy skin, it is absolutely important to avoid toxins and use as many natural products as possible. For this essential oils are great. After going alkaline food-wise, we also started to eliminate as many other toxins that enter the body from the outside soon after and we started replacing our regular skin care routine with essential oils.
Our skin being our “biggest organ” is a major receptor and guides things within 30 minutes to the inside of the body. This is why all these beautiful expensive anti-wrinkle creams and face serums, soaps and deodorants with many hard to pronounce ingredients are actually kind of dangerous to our health. Often these cosmetic products contain lots of toxins and heavy metals which are very hard to get rid off and can cause many health issues. We will talk about heavy metals in another blog post.
A good guide is: “if you cannot eat it, don’t put it on your skin.”
A good essential oil with a therapeutic grade can actually be consumed in small doses and therefore it is also safe to use on the skin.
Essential oils are the very concentrated versions of oils you find naturally in a plant. The extraction of this oil is often done by the process of distillation with water or steam.
The extracted oil contains the essence of the plant’s fragrance. The oils are used in perfumes, soaps, cosmetics and also in foods and beverages. But these concentrated oils also contain many health benefits and can be used specifically for that by itself.
How to use essential oils on your skin
In general it is recommended to not use the essential oil in its pure form on the skin. Some oils may burn or cause an allergic reaction when used pure. Therefore it is always good to test an oil on the inside of the arm first and see if there is any reaction within 24 hours if you want to use the oil pure, which is possible with certain oils.
For topical use (use on the skin) the essential oils are often mixed with a carrier oil. This is a fat based oil like almond oil, jojoba oil, coconut oil or avocado oil.
Our favourite carrier oils are pure avocado oil and coconut oil. These oils we use on our skin daily to moisturise and we love making mixes for our skin with essential oils.
You can make different mixes using different essential oils and carrier oils depending on what you want to use the mix for; is it for your face? Is it for your body ? do you want an anti-aging effect or is it against dry skin? These are the questions you have to ask yourself and then make the perfect combination.
Essential oils for beautiful skin
We use the essential oils from doTERRA ,because they are very pure in its form. Because they are so pure and concentrated they are a bit pricier than regular essential oils. But also because of their quality they also have greater health benefits. These oils have a therapeutic grade and they go through a special test called the Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade®.
Our most favourite oils for the skin are:
Lavender is known for its soothing and calming properties. For the skin it works like a charm for healing wounds, blisters, boils, burns, cuts, rashes and itching. It’s also great against dry skin, sensitive skin and wrinkles. It’s even great for dry lips.
Add a drop of lavender all to your skin lotion and you have a great moisturising, soothing anti-aging potion.
Lavender oil can be used neat (without dilution) on the skin on the area of concern.
Melaleuca is better known as tea tree oil. It is most commonly used against acne and breakouts because of its strong antiseptic properties. This is why it is one of our favourite oils for the skin. It really works wonders to get rid of pimples.
Melaleuca can actually be used neat. This means without dilution. We use this one neat on pimples or skin infections. You can also add a few drops to a carrier oil as night skin care so that you wake up with flawless skin.
Frankincense is a powerful oil that can be used for almost anything. In the essential oil world they say: “when in doubt, use frankincense.”
The oil is extracted from the resin of the Boswellia sacra tree. The oil is mentioned in many holy books and was one of the gifts to baby Jezus. Frankincense is known for its use in incense. A high quality frankincense oil can be quite pricy.
Not only is the aroma of the oil sacred, the oil can also be used topically on the skin for healing benefits. It is great against wrinkles due to its powerful anti-aging properties. This oil can also be used neat on the skin.
Lemon essential oil is a very common oil and also very affordable. This oil is extracted from the skin of lemons.
Not only does it smell great and gives you a pick-me-upper, it also has great beneficial properties for the skin. It can even out the skin tone by removing dark spots and it can help brighten up a dull complexion by removing dead skin cells.
Lemon essential oil can be used neat topically on the area of concern, however it is advised to blend it with a carrier oil, because it’s very strong and can cause irritation. This oil is best used at night time for the skin as lemon oil is a photosensitizer which means that it increases the skin’s sensitivity to sunlight.
Soothing anti-aging eye serum
Combine 1 drop of frankincense, 1 drop of lavender and 1 drop of lemon essential oil and rub neat around the eyes after cleansing the face at night.
Soothing anti-aging flawless skin night serum
Combine 5 drops of frankincense, 5 drops of lavender 5 drops of melaleuca and 5 drops of lemon essential oil with 15 ml of your favourite carrier oil like pure avocado oil. Use after cleansing the face.
NOTE: We recommend to always test an oil or oil blend first by rubbing a small drop on the inside of the arm and wait 24 hours to see if there is any allergic reaction.
