Healthy benefits of the Sauna

Sauna therapy – Heal with heat

There’s nothing more relaxing than sitting in the sauna and letting all your worries melt away. People have been enjoying sauna therapy for years and having originated in Finland, saunas are now used worldwide in gyms, spas and even at home. Yet few people know about Sauna healing powers, how amazing it is for our health, especially for detox and eliminating toxins.

Due to lifestyle most people in the modern world don’t sweat much. As a result, the pores of the skin may become clogged from not sweating out enough toxins. Also, you constantly take in environmental pollutants through your skin, which can build up, harming your organs and body systems. The sweating promoted by a sauna helps your body to rid itself of built up wastes and harmful toxins.

Yep, a relaxing sauna helps to remove toxins from our body. Our bodies are built to detox on their own to a certain extent. However, because we are exposed to so many more toxins today than ever before in human history, it’s important for us to practice simple detox measures regularly.

We love saunas because they are super safe and make us feel amazing. They also activate our greatest detox organ ; our skin.

Throughout history, humans have used Sauna healing powers as a powerful means of detoxification. Native American sweat lodges and Finnish wood-fired saunas are some examples so it really is nothing new.

So here are six reasons why saunas are good for healing and detoxing :

1/ Rejuvenation

Near infrared saunas can help reduce signs of aging and help your skin be healthier and younger looking. The red light stimulates collagen and elastin production. Collagen and elastin help plump and firm the skin which can also help alleviate cellulite .

Deep sweating can also help improve skin cell turnover

It can remove bacteria from the skin, which helps with acne and improves skin health. Additionally, NIR saunas are shown to reduce inflammation, which can alleviate skin issues such as psoriasis and eczema.

2/ Circulation

The heat of the sauna gradually increases your heart rate. At the same time, the relaxation induced by the sauna allows the blood vessels to expand, and the sauna also makes your heart work harder, similar to a physical workout. Since its effects are similar to a cardiovascular workout, regular sustained use of a sauna may improve overall circulation. This helps the body release toxins better even when you are not in the sauna though there is not conclusive evidence for the effect of sauna use on circulation.

3/ Purification

According to the North American Sauna Society, the sweating and increased circulation stimulated in the sauna can help purify your entire body from toxins. Heavy metals and other toxins can enter your body from food, water and air, and build up in the body over time, especially if you live in a city or near an industrial site. Regular use of the sauna may help your body eliminate these toxins.

4/ Relief

Another great aspect of infrared sauna therapy is its ability to reduce chronic pain without the negative side effects of some pain medications. For instance, research out of the Netherlands found that patients with rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis who underwent infrared sauna therapy for four weeks experienced reduced pain, stiffness, and fatigue following the treatment. It is speculate these benefits resulted from reduced inflammation levels, which lessen the friction between the patient’s joints that result in chronic pain.

5/ Healing

Infrared sauna therapy also has the remarkable ability to speed up the wound healing process. Research has shown that infrared light significantly increases tissue growth and cell regeneration due to our mitochondria readily accepting infrared light . This increases the cellular activity needed for wound healing, with a 155-171 percent increase in growth of human cell tissue and a 36 percent decrease in wound size observed in one study.

6/ Weight loss

Saunas can increase heart rate while lowering blood pressure and increasing oxygenation and metabolic rate. These physiological affects are incredibly similar to cardio exercise!

A study involving a group of women riding stationary bicycles demonstrated a 444% increase in weight loss for the group exposed to near infrared light when compared to the exercise only group. Far infrared heat can burn more than 600 calories in a 30 minute session!

Near infrared saunas can also help with weight loss by stimulating human growth hormone  which helps keep us young and fit.
